Random Stuff – 3/29/10

Phish will be appearing on the Jimmy Fallon show on May 13 to play a song(s) from the Stones’ Exile on Main Street. My choice: “Happy”. Should be good with the Roots backing up.

I don’t know whether or not these militia groups in Michigan are up to no good or not, but I’m ecstatic that it gives me a reason to crank up some Moxy Fruvous!

A must read  New Yorker article that talks about the what the government will be spending (giving to the insurance companies) to cover lower middle class and poor citizens and their health care. The author, John Cassidy, makes a case that as government entitlements go, this isn’t so bad.

Please read the cartoons of America’s subversive cartoonists. Check some of  ’em out here, here and here. I’m not endorsing every viewpoint in these cartoons, but they’re damn funny and according to artists like Tom Tomorrow and Jen Sorenson, with the decline of newspapers, (particularly in the the alternative media) it’s getting harder to earn a living doing what they do so well.

Signs that I’m moving away from the Democratic Party. The fist 15 minutes of the Ed Schulz TV show was a tirade about how we need to pay more taxes. And not just the rich, mind you. Ed was advocating for increased sales taxes, including taxing the internet. And the segment included an interview with my governor, the great Ed “Fast Eddie” Rendell (D-PA).

Look, my Democratic Party friends. I am all about fiscal responsibility and balancing the budget. And I have always believed raising taxes is, and should be, an option is you’re getting something in return. But we’re at just under 10% unemployment, it’s still damn hard to get a loan and consumer confidence is still in the toilet. Now is not the time to increase taxes.

Apparently, I missed one of the best NASCAR races in a while today. Denny Hamlin went from 4th to 1st in the final 3 laps on the Martinsville short track to pull a win from the jaws of defeat. Sadly, neither NASCAR or FOX had any sort of on-line feed for those of us who had to work.

Phish to Cover Genesis Songs, Open R&R HOF Ceremony Tonight in NYC

Reports have been blowing up all morning that rumors of Phish opening up tonight’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony with cover versions of a few Genesis songs has been confirmed.

It had been known for a few weeks that Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio would be making the induction speech for Genesis.

The ceremony will be shown live on FUSE TV, which until today, I didn’t know existed. (And I have the expanded Comcast digital package.)

This will be Phish’s first performance of 2010.

Phish Nation was abuzz already today as rumors had the Summer Tour dates being announced today. Now, fans are wondering with the band together in New York City if there may be an unannounced show after the HOF celebration is over.

Genesis members Phil Collins, Tony Banks, and Mike Rutherford are all expected to attend. Original front man Peter Gabriel has decided to stay home and rehearse for an upcoming solo tour.

Genesis is just one of the inductees this evening. ABBA, The Hollies and Jimmy Cliff and The Stooges are some other bands/musicians to go into the Hall as well.

Another Hurdle Cleared for Phish to Play Telluride

Glidemagazine.com reports today that the Telluride, Colorado has given their blessing to AEG to hold two Phish concerts in the quaint, scenic mountain town August 9 & 10, 2010.

After an extremely long meeting, the Telluride Town Council has approved AEG’s request to hold a pair of Phish concerts in Town Park on August 9th and 10th by a unanimous vote.

Unanimous vote? Who says government can’t get things done!

The residents played hardball before the vote, demanding that  a small number of  tickets be put aside so that the locals aren’t left looking for a miracle.

One of the biggest complaints from Colorado residents last year was the lack of tickets that went to locals. The Telluride Town Council dealt with this issue by working out a deal in which the promoters would put aside 1,500 tickets for each night for local residents.

It will probably be a few weeks, at the earliest, until any further announcements about a Telluride show are made public.

In other news, Phish announced that their new concert movie Phish 3D will be released in April. Dates and Times to be announced.

Welcome. Beer’s in the Fridge, Bathroom’s on the Right

If you stumbled upon the Belch, welcome. I’m just settin’ up the place. I hope to begin some serious, and not so serious writing soon. In the meantime, Sweden is beating Germany 2-0 early in the third period in the Olympic Ice Hockey prelims.

Come back often and see what I’ve done with the place. It may take me a while to get my sea legs and develop an original tone for this blog, but I think with some work and some consistency, I can make this a fun place to visit.

In the meantime, if ya got twenty minutes to kill, enjoy Neil Young playing “Down By The River” with Phish.
